The
Grounds unit of the Physical Plant Department maintains all
campus grounds including landscaping, the hanging of street-side
campus banners, maintenance of athletic fields, and the care
of outdoor art. Through a cooperative agreement with the New
Jersey Institute of Technology and other nearby institutions,
the Physical Plant Department has expanded its service impact
to ensure a year-round, aesthetically pleasing appearance in
the University Heights area.

Moving
Services
The Grounds
unit of the Physical Plant Department can accommodate small-scale
moving projects under certain conditions. The Department also
is available to assist with the procurement of private moving
services for large-scale projects.

Pest
Control
The Grounds
Services unit manages the exterminator contract. Service is provided
on a regular schedule to control rodents, insects and other pests
in campus buildings.

Please
Note: The use of household or commercial pest-control
products is prohibited. To ensure proper and safe treatment, all
pest-control applications should be performed by licensed professionals.
Recycling/Refuse
Collection
Recycling
Rutgers University
operates one of the most extensive recycling programs in New Jersey
under the oversight of each campus's physical plant department.
Newspapers,
office paper, corrugated cardboard, glass, aluminum, and plastic
containers are all recycled. Recyclable materials are to be deposited
in the appropriate labeled containers which are found in all high-traffic
areas of campus and outside all major academic and administrative
units.

Bulk Removals
of Recyclables
Arrangements
for the mass removal of recyclables as part of a special departmental
or office cleaning are required to be made in advance.

Trash
Removal
Custodial
Services personnel empty large common-use trash containers five
times per week. Office and individual recycling and trash baskets
are emptied daily. If more frequent emptying is required, the
department advises individuals to make use of the large, common-use
containers to dispose of their refuse and recyclables.
Hazardous
Waste
All
hazardous substances, including chemicals, oils, paints,
solvents, and radioactive material must be disposed of properly
and in accordance with state and federal regulations. It
should be noted that custodians are not to be directed
to perform any clean up of hazardous substances such as
chemical spills. The disposal of all hazardous material
on campus is handled by the Rutgers Environmental Health
and Safety Department.

Please
Note: Some equipment, such as refrigerators,
generators, and certain scientific equipment, contain
hazardous materials and must be disposed of properly.
Before disposing of equipment that may contain hazardous
materials, please contact Salvatore Palatucci, Supervisor
of Grounds, ext. 5774.
Snow
Removal/Weather Related Emergencies
The Grounds
unit of the Physical Plant Department is responsible for clearing
snow from all walkways and public spaces on campus.
- To report
a problem relating to snow removal, contact Salvatore Palatucci,
Supervisor of Grounds, ext. 5774.
Notice
of Weather Related Emergencies
It is University
policy to make every attempt to remain open during adverse weather
conditions.
- To find
out if the campus is closed during extreme weather conditions,
call the weather hotline at (732) 932-7799.
Radio station
WCTC (1450 AM) announces when university offices are closed due
to weather. If a station other than WCTC announces that Rutgers
is closed, it may mean only classes are canceled.
